GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Student Support Services, the Lead Behavior Specialist coordinates, leads and assesses instructional and behavioral programs for students within the educational environment; performs professional work providing direct-care and consultative services at the district and school levels, and leads efforts to assess, develop, implement, and monitor behavior intervention strategies of students with diverse behavioral needs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct comprehensive behavioral assessments for students with challenging behaviors, utilizing various assessment tools and techniques.
  • Lead district efforts to identify, document, make recommendations, and report data on students’ behavior based on trends and research
  • Design and deliver professional learning for school and district staff on behavior management techniques, crisis prevention and intervention, de-escalation strategies, and positive behavior support.
  • Lead collaborative multidisciplinary teams in developing individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
  • Model integration of evidence-based techniques to enhance instruction for students with social, communication, behavioral, and learning challenges
  • Serve as lead consultant to school personnel, providing guidance on behavior management strategies and interventions for individual students as well as for classroom and school-wide behavior systems.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, counselors, and support staff to develop and implement strategies for creating a positive and inclusive school climate.
  • Develop and monitor protocols for planning and conferencing with classroom teachers concerning any behavioral, social, or personal problems affecting the students
  • Utilize professional knowledge and skills to ensure implementation and maintenance of intervention plans
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of program evaluation procedures
  • Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development by keeping current with the literature and new research findings and by attending professional development as appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must have knowledge of current trends and methodologies used to address the needs of children with behavioral challenges
  • Must have skills in evaluation, development, and implementation of positive behavior intervention plans; knowledge of tiered intervention frameworks; knowledge of current accepted best practices utilized in the full continuum of placement options for students with behavioral challenges
  • Must have knowledge of data tracking and collection, record management and reporting methods, and a demonstrated understanding of differentiated instruction
  • Must have expertise in developing and providing staff development activities for individual schools and/or programs
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in special education, school psychology, applied behavior analysis, social work, counseling, or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Minimum of three years of successful experience working with students who have challenging behaviors in a therapeutic or school setting
  • Strong knowledge of behavior analysis principles, positive behavior support strategies, and evidence-based practices
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with diverse stakeholders
  • Experience providing training and professional learning to school staff
  • Must have extensive successful experience in analyzing and assessing behavior, developing, planning, and implementing behavioral interventions
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data to inform decision-making and measure outcomes
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst certification preferred, but not required

 

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS

Duties performed typically in an office or school setting. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, light lifting, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level, and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.  Driving will be required.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

11 months; 8.0 hours per day



EVALUATION

The Assistant Director—Student Support Services will conduct performance evaluations annually to assess the effectiveness of the employee's performance in carrying out the above responsibilities.
